The Australian Government is in the process of phasing out the issuance of visa's for U.S. Citizens and instead going to an automated system in which particular information of a person flying into Australia is entered into Airline and Australian Immigration computer systems.

This process is supposed to become part of the procedure when bookings are made for travel into Australia and will be incorporated into the different CRS systems used by airlines and travel agents.

Certain Airlines also have the ability to provide Electronic Travel Authority clearance for their passengers provided that the applicant contact their reservation office prior to travel.

You can only apply for an ETA while you are outside of Australia. You also must hold an ETA-eligible passport. The table below lists the kinds of passports:

* Holders of Taiwan passports can only be processed for an ETA if resident in and applying in Taiwan.
** Holders of UK passports which indicate their nationality to be British National (Overseas) can only be processed for an ETA if resident in and applying in Hong Kong.
